How to crop shipping labels in bulk — free vs paid tools compared (2026)

22 May 20268 min readBy The ShipWorks team

Every Indian e-commerce seller hits the same wall once they cross about 30 orders a day: the manual label-cropping workflow stops scaling. What was a 10-minute task at 10 orders becomes an hour-and-a-half slog at 100. This guide compares the realistic options — free workflows, browser extensions, online editors, and dedicated paid tools — and helps you decide which one fits your current volume.

Quick decision tree
  • < 20 orders/day:Free workflows are fine. Don't over-tool.
  • 20-50 orders/day: Paid tool starts paying for itself in saved hours.
  • 50+ orders/day: Dedicated tool is essential — labour cost alone justifies it.
  • Multi-marketplace: Skip free workflows. Format complexity multiplies.

What is label cropping?

Marketplace seller dashboards export shipping labels as full A4 PDFs. Each page typically contains the shipping label on the top half, an invoice or tax page on the bottom, and marketplace branding around it. Thermal printers (3×5 to 4×6 inches) can't print A4 directly, and printing the invoice on a label sticker wastes media and time.

Cropping = isolating just the shipping label portion of each page, scaling it to your thermal printer's size, protecting the barcode zone, and arranging the output PDF in a print-ready sequence. Multiply by 100 orders/day and the work compounds fast.

Free options (manual)

1. Desktop PDF editor (Adobe Acrobat, Foxit, etc.)

Most sellers already have one installed. You open the marketplace PDF, crop each page individually, and save the result.

  • Pros: zero new tools, no learning curve, complete control over each crop.
  • Cons: 100% manual. No courier sorting. No batch processing.
  • Realistic speed: 60-90 minutes per 100 labels.
  • Fits:< 20 orders/day, single marketplace.

2. Chrome extensions (free PDF cropping)

Several browser extensions let you crop PDFs to a fixed rectangle. Browser-based, so no install. Faster than a full desktop editor for single batches but still manual per page.

  • Pros: free, browser-based, no install.
  • Cons: no batch sort by courier, occasional quality loss from re-rendering, no thermal-size presets.
  • Realistic speed: 45-60 minutes per 100 labels.

3. Online PDF tools (iLovePDF, Smallpdf, etc.)

Upload PDF, crop, download. Free tier usually has upload limits and watermarks; paid tiers exist but are pricier than dedicated label tools.

  • Pros: free tier available, no install.
  • Cons: upload size limits, privacy considerations for buyer data, no sorting or marketplace-aware parsing.
  • Fits: one-off batches, very low volume.
Privacy note on free online tools
Marketplace label PDFs contain buyer name, full address, phone number, and AWB. Uploading these to free online PDF tools means handing that data to a third party with unclear retention. For production seller workflows, prefer tools that delete uploads on a documented timeline.

1. ShipWorks (India-specific)

Indian marketplace-aware. Drops one PDF in, auto-detects the courier from the label table, sorts by SKU + courier, crops to thermal size, and outputs a print-ready PDF.

  • Pros: Meesho Supplier + Seller panel support; Flipkart FBF / Smart Seller / F-Assured all in one uploader; Amazon label+invoice pairing; thermal sizes 3×5 / 4×4 / 4×6 / 6×4; Low-Shipping AI for Meesho volumetric bracket optimization.
  • Cons: India-only marketplace coverage today. Low-Shipping AI is apparel-only.
  • Realistic speed: ~30 seconds per 100 labels (PDF processing time).
  • Pricing: Free 7-day trial (no card) → Starter ₹199/28d → Growth ₹349/56d → Yearly ₹1,799/365d. See full pricing.

2. International bulk label tools

Tools built for US / UK / Shopify-led ecosystems. Solid for sellers who ship globally, but India-specific marketplace formats (Meesho Supplier panel, Flipkart FBF two-up split, Amazon India invoice layouts) are not first-class.

  • Pros: mature, well-integrated with international shipping aggregators.
  • Cons: USD pricing converts to ₹2,000-8,000 per month — much pricier than India-specific tools; Meesho support is rare to non-existent.
  • Fits: sellers shipping globally or focused on Shopify / WooCommerce.

ROI: when does a paid tool pay for itself?

Assume your time is worth ₹500/hour (conservative for a seller running their own dispatch). At 100 orders/day:

MethodDaily timeAnnual timeAnnual labour cost
Manual cropping~1 hour~365 hours₹1,82,500
Dedicated tool~1 min~6 hours₹3,000
Annual labour cost at ₹500/hour. Tool subscription not included.

Even at the Yearly plan (₹1,799), the labour savings are about ₹1,77,500/year — roughly 100× the tool cost. For lower-volume sellers (30-50 orders/day), savings still land in the ₹50,000-1,00,000 range annually.

How to choose

Three questions decide the right pick:

  1. Volume:< 20 orders/day → free. 20-50/day → paid starts to make sense. 50+/day → paid is essential.
  2. Marketplaces: single-marketplace sellers can sometimes stretch free tools further. Multi-marketplace (Meesho + Flipkart + Amazon) workflows benefit far more from a dedicated tool.
  3. India-specific features:if you need Meesho Supplier panel support, Meesho volumetric AI, or Flipkart FBF splits — international tools won't cover these. A domestic tool is the practical choice.

FAQs

Q: Are free tools secure for buyer data?

It depends on each tool's privacy policy. Online uploaders vary widely. For production workflows, prefer tools that document upload retention. ShipWorks deletes processed PDFs on a rolling basis within 30 days and doesn't train AI on uploaded data — full details in the Privacy Policy.

Q: Can I switch tools mid-month if my volume changes?

Yes — paid plans on ShipWorks are time-bound passes, not contracts. Buy a 28-day Starter to test; switch to Growth or Yearly when volume justifies it.

Q: Will ShipWorks add Shopify integration?

Today the workflow is PDF upload (drop your marketplace export, download processed PDF). Shopify/WooCommerce integrations are on the roadmap. For now, exporting labels from Shopify and uploading them into ShipWorks works for most sellers.
